What’s Happening in Our Class

We are so excited for the start of the 2012-2013 school year.  It is important to keep the lines of communication open.  We may not have gotten a chance to talk to each of you on Open House, so we wanted to make sure everyone had access to information about our daily routines and basic information about reading and language arts.

Course Expectations:  sixth grade course expectations

Homework:  Homework is assigned nightly (Monday-Thursday).  Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night and fill out the reading log.  Language Arts changes nightly- writer’s notebook entry, grammar or spelling activities, or editing/revising drafts.   Please check classwebs (found on the Bethel Middle School Home Page under academic clusters) nightly- to see the homework.  Also, homework is posted in the classroom and students are expected to fill out their agenda pads.

Grading:  Students will be graded on homework (check plus-100, check- 85, check minus- 70), classwork, quizzes and tests.  Also, students will have a preparation and participation grade- it includes making sure all materials have been brought to class.

Collaboration:  Students will be expected to work together.  Groupings will change throughout the year.  We ask that while working with classmates, students show respect towards each other.  At times, students may not be working with their friends, but we expect them to get along and accomplish the task at hand without hurt feelings.

Extra Help:  Extra help is available Tuesdays after school.  In addition to after school help, before school and lunch help is available for students.  If a structured study environment is needed, there is Homework Hall- Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  Teachers are available to assist students in the Media Center during this time.

Communication, Collaboration and Celebration

Communication is key.  As a teacher, I am often thinking about how to communicate to parents all the wonderful things their children are learning.  The students I teach grow in a myriad of ways.  Why not also celebrate their accomplishments! That is how the idea of this blog came to be, a way to communicate with parents.  Then another thought came to me.  Education is rapidly changing, and there is no reason for my students not to be connected to other classrooms in Connecticut, the United States, and even the world.  Imagine being able to link to another classroom halfway around the world without being there physically, that would be an unforgettable learning experience for the students.

The purpose of this blog is to communicate with the community, collaborate with others, and to celebrate students’ accomplishments.  Please feel free to explore and comment on the site.

This is the start to something amazing- learning, sharing, and collaborating!

Enjoy-
