Congratulations

March was Women’s History Month.  Some students participated in a Women’s History Essay Contest:   “Important Women in Connecticut’s History and How their Contributions to the State and the Nation Affect Me”. This essay contest was hosted by State Senator Michael A. McLachlan’s office.

Students were given a choice of notable women from Connecticut to read about, for example,  Dorthy Hamill, Katharine Hepburn, Helen Keller. Next the students needed to answer the essay prompt.

I am proud to announce the two winners- Jillian and Jillian.

Both girls will be recognized in a ceremony hosted by the State Senator on April 30th.  Congratulations to Jillian and Jillian.

Their essays will be posted soon!

A Classroom Community

We recently finished our Heritage Unit.  We studied immigration, and its affect on the United States and on us.  Below are some images of projects, learning experiences, and videos.  The students worked hard throughout this unit.  Their learning is expressed best through their own words.

Spirit Week 2013

Most students look forward to Spirit Week.  Penny wars, spirit days and a pep rally fill the week with excitement and some friendly competition.  It is a time for students to show their enthusiasm for BMS!  The students sure did.

Each day students had a chance to show their spirit:

Monday:  Crazy Hair Day

Tuesday: Dress Like a Teacher

Wednesday:  Disney Day

Thursday: Twin/Multiple Day

Friday:  BMS Pride (Blue and White)

My homeroom sure did show their pride- each day 17 or more students participated in the spirit days.  The week came to an end with a pep rally.  During the pep rally, grade level homerooms competed against each other for the coveted Spirit Cup!

Students participated in many activities during the pep rally:  pie eating contest, musical chairs, limbo, hula hoop contest, and hula hoop relay.  In addition, students cheered on their cluster teachers in a foul shot context.  The cluster to sink 10 foul shots wins- cluster 6B teachers dominated this event.  Then, there was Mr. Rinas’s trick shot.  He had five tries to sink a basketball from off the wall.  Cheers filled the gym. If Mr. Rinas made the shot, teachers got to pie (shaving cream in a pie tin) a student (a student was picked based on exhibiting respect and responsibility) in the face,  If he missed all five shots, the student got to pie the teacher.  Goggles and towel ready, the teachers waited in anticipation.  And, Mr. Rinas came through for the teachers on the third attempt.  Students were pied, all in the name of fun! Sorry Mike, maybe you will get your chance next year!

Congratulations to Mr. Salvador’s Homeroom, once again winners of the cup!

Spirit week was a true success- It is a time for all members of the BMS community to come together!  The week culminated with a special school wide assembly, where each cluster created a video based on a specific theme- sixth grade’s theme was to create a music video related to respect and responsibility.  6B created a video utilizing Aretha Franklin’s song “Respect”. Creative and engaging are just two words to describe the six cluster videos.  It truly was a pleasure watching the hard work of the students come alive through their video creations.

A special thanks goes out to Student Government and Ms. Tierney and Ms. Strasser, who planned this terrific week. Without their hard work and dedication, this week would not be possible.
