New Year New Look

New Year New Look!!!!!

What is great about the summer is it provides a chance to explore new resources and play around with different ideas.  This blog is currently receiving a makeover because I had a chance to explore!  First off it has a new name- Making Waves in Sixth Grade- that will be the theme for this year.  I am so excited!!!

Next, throughout the summer new links and technology resources will be provided. to explore- especially other students’ blogs, so inquiry can begin for students.

The first thing I want to share is my summer reading list.  I am currently reading The Maze Runner by James Dashner.  A novel I can not put down.  It is about a boy who has woken up in a place with no memory of his life before.  There are no adults and all the kids have a job to do.  He has to find a way out of this place before it is too late.  I look forward to some great novel discussions this year.

My son has discovered Harry Potter, so together we have started the journey through the series.  We are reading the first novel right now.  Reading with Kyle is always an adventure- so many questions and thoughts- he really makes me think about the novel in a different way.  REMEMBER to discuss the novels you are reading, so much more can be discovered through a little conversation.

Other novels on my own reading list:

Absolutely Normal Chaos  Sharon Creech

The Calder Game written by one of my favorite authors, Blue Balliett

Need interesting novels to read check out the book trailer link or click on Shelfari on the left side bar, a variety of novels to choose from are provided along with short summaries!!!!

Happy Summer

Summer Reading Motivation

The end of the school year brings many smiles for the students. Summer vacation begins-fun in the sun, sports, camp, vacations, but we cannot forget it is a time to catch up on our reading.

This year the students in my classes (51 students) read about 423 novels. Most students read between 7 and 10 novels this year. Seventeen students read 11 or more novels, and one student, Conner, read 33 novels this year.

In an effort to keep reading throughout the summer going, BMS, is reading Bystander by James Preller.  In the fall, we will be discussing the novel in our Advisory classes.  Below is the book trailer for it.

In addition, students are asked to keep track of what they read throughout the summer.  Reading does not have to just be novels- blogs, articles, newspapers, manuals, etc.  can all be counted on the log.  The idea is to keep the students reading!

The Thief Lord– Cornelia Funk

The Hunger Games Trilogy

The Westing Game– Ellen Raskin

Daniel X– James Patterson

Theodore Borne– John Grisham

The Wright 3– Blue Balliet

Down the Rabbit Hole– Peter Abrahams
