Great Conversation

Recently, the students participated in their last Socratic Seminar of the year. Students read and annotated “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll. Then they watched a portrayal of the poem. After watching and reading the poem, the students worked with partners to fill out a chart. See below.

Students created discussion questions in order to participate in the Socratic Seminar. There was one change made during this Socratic discussion. The students in the outer circle were allowed to participate in the discussion but through utilizing technology. Students posted on Padlet, which enables teachers to create discussion walls in order to assist students in alternate discussion opportunities. (Padlet has other uses which will be explored in a future post.) Students could use their own technology or the two classroom I-Pads to post discussion questions or respond to ideas brought up during the discussion. Below are the discussion boards from block 2 and 5.

In the end, through the discussion students gained a deeper understanding of the piece from questioning each other.  I am truly proud of how all the students have improved with their discussion groups and have improved their thinking.
