Using Technology

I LOVE learning about new new web based programs- here is an easy one to use!

Mrs. Emerick

I created this image on the website, Tagxedo-Word Clouds with Style .

Tagxedo turns words — famous speeches, news articles, slogans and themes, or your own words  into a visually stunning word cloud, words individually sized   appropriately to highlight the frequencies of occurrence within the body of text. (Tagxedo.com)

It is a website I will be utilizing with my sixth graders this year.

Hooked on Reading

So besides getting to relax, spend time with friends and family, and soak up the sun, summer means time to read for me.  Well, I should say it means getting to read,, read, and read more novels during my free time.  Besides reading for myself, I enjoy catching up on adolescent novels.

Finished, The Maze Runner!!!!  LOVED IT!!!  I can’t wait to have discussions about it.  It took me a few chapters to get hooked, but I kept with it and was pulled in to the story of Thomas who ends up in the Glade with no memory of how he got there.  He is surrounded by kids, who are in charge.  Their job is to solve the maze.  But as Thomas gets acquainted to the Glade, he feels different, like something is telling him he has the answers. But how?? Kids have been there for two years and are no closer to the solution of the maze. The novel is about his quest for the answers hidden inside the maze..  I could not put it down.  Now I am onto book 2:  The Scorch Trials– just as good.

Hooked on Hogwarts– loving Harry Potter- can’t believe it has taken me so long to reread the first novel!  Muggles, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, Professor Snape, Peeves, Quidditch, and HE who shall not be named is all coming back to life for me.  That is what a good book does-opens the door to a new world, new thoughts, new perspectives, and oh so much more.  That is what makes you imagine- want to discuss-and JUST keep reading.!!!!  It is great to reread novels read previously; you might end up picking up things you missed the first time around.

So I have found two excellent novel choices, here is where I love to read- on the deck, relaxing on the couch.  Where do you like to get swept away with a novel??????

Turn Back Tuesday- The Bronx Zoo

Looking back at the 2012-2013 school year, we accomplished and took part in many awesome activities. One activity that cannot be overlooked was our trip to The Bronx Zoo.  What an amazing experience!  I know I was so impressed with the students’ inquiry with wanting to learn more about the animals.  Their enthusiasm was contagious.  Below is a video highlighting some of animals and sights of the trip.

Now, our zoo experience did not end there.  Students then took part in an inquiry mini project.  The project was to collaborate with classmates using information gained from the trip and research in order to decide whether it is humane to hold animals in captivity.  The culminating activity was for students  to participate in a homeroom debate.  In each of the students’ classes they research different aspects of the project:

Social Studies:  watch videos on the topic and took notes

Math:  analyzed photographs taken from the trip

Science:  researched the pros and cons of zoos

Reading/Language Arts:  Close read articles on the pros and cons of zoos

Once research was accomplished- students collaborated with each other in small groups.  They filled out a discussion web.  After the discussion, students were able to make informed an decision about whether they were for or against zoos.  Many students who were once for zoos, were against them after researching.  Overall, students were split 50/50 on the issue.  Once the students picked a position and created their claim, they compiled reasons and evidence to support their claim in order to prepare for the debate.  The debate and project were a success.

Through this project students utilized 21st Century Learning Skills:  creativity, innovation, communication, collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking skills

Below are some images of the debate- four students were in the center of the room (2 for and 2 against the issue).  As the debate went on and students wanted to add onto discussion, they would tap teammates on the shoulder and enter the debate to add onto to what was being said or rebut points made.  All students got a chance to participate and truly listened to each other’s perspectives.
